How Do You Remove Pet Stains From Carpet?

Removing pet stains from the carpet

Pets are our loyal companions and in many cases are considered to be members of the family.  We love them, care for them and in return they provide us with lots of fun, laughs, love – and some cleanup.  It’s one of the few downsides of being a pet owner.  They often leave their best treats for the carpet, as it is so inviting and clean.  For pet owners, it’s a challenge to achieve pet stain and odor removal.

Here are some great ways to remove pet stains and odors:

Basic clean Pet stain removal is the first part of the challenge and begins with a good, thorough wiping and blotting up of whatever is on your carpet.  Try to get the most of it up with rags, and paper towels before moving on to removing the stain.  It’s even good to use a rag with just plain water first.  Then, you’re on to the next step which involves further stain removal and pet odor removal.

Go natural Consider trying natural stain removers before moving on to carpet cleaners.  You’ll save a few bucks and running off to the store.  It’s also safer for you and your pets to use natural cleaners.

-        One great combination is a solution of vinegar, water and baking soda.  Vinegar is a great natural cleaner for removing stains.  Use white vinegar.  Baking soda is a natural odor remover.  Mix up a combination in a spray bottle and use it between scrubbings on the affected area.  Let the solution sit in the carpet for about 5 minutes.

-        Another option is club soda.  You’ll need to apply it several times as it’s effective only when the soda is bubbling.  Blot the stain after the soda stops fizzing and repeat.

-        You can use just plain baking soda for smelly areas that don’t seem to be stained any more.  Place a small mound of baking soda over the affected area and let it sit for a few hours – then vaccum.

Check the padding If your carpet has padding underneath, you may need to check this as well.  You may need to apply cleaning strategies to the padding as well, and in the worst of cases, replace a portion of it.

Wet vac You may be able to rent a wet vac which removes traces of heavy stains with plain old water.  Be sure to follow instructions carefully when using them.  Don’t confuse this with steam cleaners because these, with the heat, odors will just be set permanently into the carpet.

Although pet stain removal may seem difficult and annoying, the solutions above are simple strategies that work in most cases for pet stain and odor removal.  Pet odor removal is most often solved by use of baking soda which you probably have in your kitchen.  As much as possible try to treat stains as soon as possible before they are set and dried.  Then go enjoy your pets and remember all the reasons you love them.
